How to Identify the History of a Used Car
- Take the car to a body shop or other automobile appraiser and ask for an inspection and report. Ask them to check the body part alignments, frame alignment or the paint thicknesses. Pull up carpets, for example, to see if there is mud.
- Obtain a title history from the State Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Observe the car’s tires. Are the tires mismatched? Has one tire worn abnormally in a short period of time?
- Ask a dealer for that make and model of car to pull a vehicle services history for the car.
- Examine the stickers on body parts. Original parts will have different stickers than aftermarket parts. Are the stickers present, or have they been painted over?
- Are there runs in the paint or clear coat? Is there evidence of paint on the rubber moldings? Are there any screw’s bolts which have obviously been unscrewed? Can you see marks in the paint where a bolt used to be lined up? Is the factory sticker on the door pillar (at the rear of the driver’s side front door? Do the VIN numbers match on various body parts?
